WHAT’S TYPICAL OF PRE-TEENS AND TEENS IN THE LEARNING LOUNGE?
You will choose one numerical data question OR one categorical data question. You will be required to collect data using a survey, organize and analyze the collected data using tallies, tables, and graphs. You will display your data on a poster board. You will explain your interpretation of the data through a written report. Here is all you need to know to be successful with this project.
STEP 1: CHOOSING A QUESTION
Numerical Data Questions
1. What’s the average amount of time spent watching TV on the weekends?
2. What’s the average amount of time spent watching TV during the week?
3. What’s the typical number of late homework assignments turned in to Mrs. Goto?
4. What’s the typical number of hours spent sleeping on the weekend by students in the Learning Lounge?
5. What’s the typical number of movies watched in one week by students in the Learning Lounge?
6. What’s the typical bedtime of students in the Learning Lounge?
7. What’s the typical number of pets per household in the Learning Lounge?
8. What’s the average amount of time spent on homework?
9. What’s the average amount of time spent talking on the phone in the Learning Lounge?
10. What’s the typical number of siblings per household in the Learning Lounge?
11. How many cans of soda do students drink a day?
12. What’s the typical number of hours spent on the Internet (e-mail, Myspace) in one day?
13. What’s the typical number of hours spent listening to music (radio, CD’s, I-Pod) on the weekend?
14. What’s the typical height in the Learning Lounge?
Categorical Data Questions
2. COLLECTING DATA: You will need to do the following to help you collect your data.
1. Create one survey for your numerical or categorical question.
2. Keep track of total number of students surveyed.
3. Keep track of girls and boys surveyed.
3. ORGANIZING AND ANALYZING DATA: You will need to do the following to help you organize and analyze your data for your numerical survey OR your categorical survey.
1. Create a table.
2. Use tally marks in your table to help you organize your data.
3. Display your data in 3 different graphs. Here are your graph choices.
A. Bar Graph
B. Pie Graph (pie chart)
C. Line Plot
D. Stem and Leaf Plot (may not apply to your data collection)
E. Coordinate Graph (may not apply to your data collection)
4. INTERPRETING YOUR DATA: You must write a written report that is 5 paragraphs long to explain the following items:
1. Describe your question.
2. Identify whether it is numerical or categorical data you were collecting.
3. Describe who you collected data from. Include the following:
A. Number of total students surveyed.
B. Number of boys and number of girls surveyed.
4. Describe the 3 graphs you chose to do.
5. Explain your data. Include 5 or more facts from your graphs. Use MEAN, MEDIAN, MODE, RANGE when it is appropriate.
