Salmon Life Cycle Web Quest

A Web Quest for the 6th Grade

In preparation for our Sultan Salmon Hatchery Visit on November 14th

Introduction

You have a job to do!  The 6th grade classrooms at Martha Lake Elementary School have been invited to visit the Salmon Hatchery in Sultan, Washington.  We have been asked to become “Salmon Experts” so we can help solve the problem of the declining salmon population in Seattle’s streams.

In order to be a good Salmon Steward, you will need to learn and understand the life cycle of salmon and what kind of environment they need to survive.  You will also need to know what kinds of hazards threaten salmon survival.

Finally, you will need to create an Information Salmon Book to teach others the things you have learned.  This will help others protect salmon as well.

The Task

Your task has many important parts:

  • Research the salmon life cycle.
  • Research its environment (habitat).
  • Research the things that threaten salmon survival.
  • Organize your research in your reading notebook.
  • Use the information you get from researching to create a Salmon Life Cycle Information Book using Power Point.

The Process

You will work with a partner to do this Salmon Web Quest and Power Point Project.

1.  You will use the Internet and your Salmon Booklet to research, read and learn about the different species of salmon, stages of the salmon life cycle, needs and hazards at each stage, purpose of a salmon hatchery, and interesting facts.

2.  You must research and take notes on the following topics.  You will then be required to write a salmon essay using your notes to help you.

Part 1:  Identify the different kinds of salmon found in the Pacific Northwest

Part 2: Name of life cycle stage and describe each stage.

Part 3: Explain the needs the salmon have at each stage of the life cycle.

Part 4: Explain the hazards that threaten the salmon at each stage in the life cycle.

Part 5.  Explain the purpose of a Salmon Hatchery.

Part 6.  Include interesting facts.

3.  You will take notes in your Reading Notebook.

4.  You will make six drawings on 4x4 inch paper, one drawing for each stage of the life cycle.

5.  You will place your essay, 6 drawings of the life cycle stages, and drawings of Pacific Northwest Salmon on your storyboard.

6.  When you are finished with your storyboard, you will create a Power Point to help you present your research.
